Deck/Seamanship Crew is responsible for the safe operation, navigation, and maintenance of a vessel under the direction of the ship’s captain or navigating officer. They perform a wide range of duties on deck and other areas of the ship, including steering, handling cargo, maintaining equipment and vessel surfaces, monitoring safety and life-saving equipment, and assisting with emergency procedures. Their role ensures the vessel operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with maritime regulations.
Tasks
Steer the ship according to navigational instructions.
Maintain a proper lookout to avoid hazards.
Handle ropes, wires, and operate mooring equipment during docking, undocking, and cargo operations.
Operate and maintain ship equipment, cargo gear, rigging, and life-saving and fire-fighting appliances.
Perform deck and hull cleaning, scraping, painting, and other routine maintenance duties.
Assist in safety drills and emergency procedures.
Assist with routine maintenance and minor repairs of ship systems and equipment.
Load, unload, rig, and stow cargo-handling gear.
Maintain accurate records of equipment inspections, maintenance, and safety drills.
Skills
Basic
Ability to communicate clearly using basic maritime terminology and follow instructions during routine operations and emergencies.
Ability to remain calm, disciplined, and responsive when managing safety duties and on-board operational issues.
Basic understanding of navigation principles, deck operations, and standard maritime procedures.
Good coordination, attention to detail, and alertness to support safe vessel and deck activities.
Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual tasks, work long shifts, and operate in challenging sea conditions.
Specific
Ability to interpret nautical charts, maritime signals, and flags for navigation.
Experience with conducting safety drills, emergency evacuations, and crowd control during incidents.
Experience with maintaining shipboard systems and equipment and performing minor mechanical repairs.
Knowledge of international maritime regulations and safety protocols including firefighting, first aid, and survival techniques.
Proficiency in operating and maintaining life-saving and emergency equipment such as lifeboats and life rafts.
Proficiency in operating and maintaining steering mechanisms, deck machinery, and navigational instruments such as compasses, radar, and global positioning system.
Proficiency in performing seamanship tasks such as knot tying, splicing, rigging, mooring, and cargo handling.
