Timberman (Underground) is responsible for installing and maintaining timber supports to stabilise mine shafts, tunnels, and underground workings. They assess ground conditions, prepare and cut timber, and fit support structures to ensure safe underground environments, working closely with geotechnical engineers and mine supervisors to prevent collapses and maintain operational safety.
Tasks
Install and secure timber and other structural supports in underground tunnels, drifts and shafts.
Cut, shape and assemble timber, poles and arches to required specifications for ground support.
Inspect and maintain existing support structures, identifying damaged or unstable areas.
Monitor roof and wall conditions to ensure ground stability during mining operations.
Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to position reinforcements correctly.
Conduct routine safety checks on support systems and work areas.
Report hazardous conditions and ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations.
Collaborate with mining and blasting teams to support safe excavation activities.
Skills
Basic
Ability to follow work instructions and interpret simple technical drawings or diagrams.
Ability to handle, lift, and move objects safely and efficiently.
Basic understanding of occupational safety practices and emergency procedures.
Good hand–eye coordination and manual dexterity for handling tools, equipment, and materials.
Strong physical fitness and stamina to work safely in confined and hazardous underground environments.
Specific
Ability to assess geological conditions and adapting support structures.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and support plans.
Experience with installing mesh, bolts, hydraulic props and timber supports.
Knowledge of safety standards and protocols for underground timbering.
Knowledge of structural loading and stress management in underground spaces.
Knowledge of timber grading, handling and preservation techniques.
Proficiency in operating timber-cutting equipment, jackhammers and mechanical support tools.
