Painter prepares and coats a variety of surfaces with paint, varnish, glazes, or other finishes to protect, decorate, or enhance them. This includes work on buildings, interior walls, furniture, metal structures, ceramics, glass, ships, and signage, with attention to surface preparation, coating application, and quality standards. They may also specialise in decorative or protective techniques such as wallpapering, powder coating, or creating visual art and lettering on different materials.

Tasks

Prepare and clean surfaces such as walls, metal, glass, ceramics, structural steel, and ships’ hulls to ensure proper adhesion of paints or coatings.

Select, mix, and prepare paints, pigments, glazes, varnishes, or powder coatings to achieve required colours, finishes, and protective properties.

Apply paint, varnish, or coatings to surfaces using brushes, rollers, spray guns, or other specialised equipment.

Apply protective or decorative coatings to materials such as metal, structural steel, ceramics, glass, and marine structures to improve appearance and durability.

Measure, cut, and install wallpaper or decorative coverings on interior walls, ceilings, or other prepared surfaces.

Inspect painted or coated surfaces and perform touch-ups, repairs, or adjustments to achieve required finish and quality standards.

Operate, clean, and maintain painting, spraying, or coating equipment and tools to ensure proper functioning.

Carry out finishing processes such as curing, glazing, or coating thickness checks to ensure durability and consistency.

Knowledge of wallpaper application techniques, including design patterns, adhesives, and precise fitting.
