Pipe Fitter installs, assembles, maintains and repairs piping systems that convey water, steam, air, gas, oil, chemicals and wastewater across residential, industrial, marine and specialised settings. They interpret technical drawings, measure, cut, bend, join and secure pipes and fittings, and carry out testing to ensure systems are leak-free and compliant with safety and environmental standards. The role may involve work on heating, cooling, ventilation, high- and low-pressure systems, and related mechanical installations.

Tasks

Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications for piping installations.

Measure, cut, thread, bend, weld, and join pipes, tubes, and fittings to required specifications.

Assemble and install piping systems for water, gas, steam, air, ventilation, sewerage, and other liquids or gases.

Install and connect fixtures and equipment such as sinks, toilets, water heaters, and related appliances to piping systems.

Lay and install pipes in trenches or structures to form water mains, drainage, and sewerage systems.

Inspect, examine, and test installed piping systems using pressure gauges, hydrostatic tests, or other methods to ensure proper operation and leak-free performance.

Carry out maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of existing piping systems and related equipment.

Dismantle and replace defective or decommissioned piping components and systems.

Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other construction or maintenance personnel during installation and repair works.

Ensure all piping installation and maintenance work complies with relevant safety, quality, and environmental regulations.

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.

Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations related to piping installation and maintenance.

Knowledge of various piping materials, pipe joints, and fittings for water, sewerage, and ventilation systems.

Knowledge of welding and soldering techniques, including metal inert gas welding, tungsten inert gas welding, and arc welding.
