Field Crop Farm Worker plans and carries out the cultivation and harvesting of field and plantation crops, including cereals, vegetables, fruits and fibre crops, for sale or distribution to markets and buyers. The role involves land preparation, planting or sowing, irrigation, fertilisation, pest and disease control, harvesting and post-harvest handling, as well as operating and maintaining farm machinery and equipment. They monitor crop growth and apply appropriate farming practices to ensure sustainable production, optimal yield and quality of output.
Tasks
Prepare and maintain farmland, fields, orchards or plantations, including soil preparation, land management and soil health maintenance.
Plant, sow, transplant and cultivate field, fruit, fibre and tropical crops according to production requirements.
Manage irrigation, drainage and fertilisation to support optimal crop growth.
Monitor crop growth, soil conditions, pests and diseases, and apply appropriate control measures when necessary.
Harvest crops at the appropriate maturity stage and carry out basic post-harvest handling, processing and storage.
Operate, maintain and perform routine servicing of farm machinery, tools and equipment used in crop production.
Apply fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides and other agricultural inputs in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines.
