Animal Caretaker provides routine care and supervision of animals in facilities such as shelters, kennels, zoos, farms, veterinary clinics, pet shops and research establishments. The role involves feeding, watering, grooming, exercising and monitoring animals, maintaining clean and safe enclosures, and observing and reporting on their health and behaviour. Animal Caretakers may also assist with basic treatments and behaviour management to ensure the welfare, comfort and safety of animals under their care.

Tasks

Feed and provide water to animals according to prescribed diets.

Clean and maintain animal enclosures to ensure hygiene, safety, and welfare.

Observe animals daily to monitor behaviour, health, and signs of illness or distress.

Groom animals, including bathing, brushing, and trimming nails or coats.

Exercise animals and carry out appropriate enrichment activities.

Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and routine care procedures.

Handle animals using safe and appropriate techniques, including basic training practices.

Maintain records of animal health, feeding, and behaviour.
