Motor Vehicle Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a motor vehicle, including cars, trucks, and motorcycles. They work on mechanical, electronic, and structural systems, ensuring engines, brakes, transmissions, electrical components, and vehicle bodies function safely and efficiently. They perform inspections, routine maintenance, and repairs following manufacturer specifications and safety standards, using specialised diagnostic tools, and provide technical guidance to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and reliable.

Tasks

Conduct inspections and diagnose faults in vehicle systems using specialised diagnostic tools and computerised software, covering engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, fuel, electrical, and mechatronic components.

Perform repairs, replacements, and adjustments on faulty or worn vehicle components including engines, transmissions, brake systems, suspension, panels, and structural parts.

Carry out routine and preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, fluid checks, tyre rotations, filter replacements, and system calibrations.

Conduct road testing and functional testing of vehicles to verify safety and performance after maintenance or repairs.

Inspect, adjust, lubricate, and recalibrate engines and key vehicle systems to ensure optimal performance.

Update vehicle software and Electronic Control Units (ECU) in accordance with manufacturer requirements and specifications.

Maintain accurate service records, repair documentation, and parts usage logs.

Advise customers on vehicle condition, maintenance schedules, repair options, and safety considerations.

Follow safety procedures, manufacturer guidelines, and environmental regulations while maintaining a clean and organised workshop environment.

Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical systems, including Engine Control Units (ECU) and electronic braking systems.

Proficiency in welding, fabrication, corrosion protection, and vehicle body cosmetic restoration techniques.
