Forestry Technician assists in the management, conservation, and sustainable use of forest and tree resources across various environments, including a natural forest, plantation, or urban landscape. They conduct field surveys, monitor tree and forest health, support reforestation and silviculture activities, and help implement a forest management plan while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, operating and maintaining forestry equipment, collecting and analysing ecological data, and contributing to biodiversity conservation, timber production, and community-based forestry initiatives.
Tasks
Conduct detailed forest inventories and surveys to assess forest conditions, timber volume, and tree health.
Map forest areas and forest stands using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.
Monitor pest and disease outbreaks and environmental conditions, and implement control measures as required.
Plan, assist, and supervise tree planting, silviculture, and forest rehabilitation programmes.
Collect and analyse soil, vegetation, and other environmental samples to inform forest management decisions.
Maintain forestry tools and equipment and support nursery operations to ensure proper functioning.
Prepare technical reports, documentation, and field records on forest conditions and activities.
Assist in forest fire prevention, control, and enforcement of forestry laws and regulations.
Educate local communities and stakeholders on sustainable forestry, tree care, and environmental conservation.
Apply treatments such as fertilizers or pest control, and carry out pruning, planting, and tree maintenance activities safely.

Basic
Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities to work independently or in teams.
Basic computer literacy, including use of forestry software, GPS/GIS tools, and Microsoft Office.
Effective communication skills to report findings and collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
Good physical fitness and stamina for fieldwork in rugged outdoor environments.
Strong observation and analytical skills to monitor and assess forest and tree health.
Specific
Adherence to occupational health and safety standards in forestry and arboricultural operations, including safe equipment handling.
Competency in forest and tree inventories, data collection, statistical analysis, and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping.
Competency in nursery management to ensure healthy seedling growth and survival.
Competency in technical report writing, forest management planning, and environmental impact assessment preparation.
Expertise in silvicultural and arboricultural practices including planting, thinning, pruning, regeneration, and pest or disease management.
Knowledge in environmental regulations, conservation policies, and sustainable forestry certification in Malaysia.
Knowledge in tree and forest species identification, forest ecology, and silvicultural principles.
Proficiency in forestry tools and equipment including Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, clinometers, diameter tapes, and soil testing kits.
