GREEN
Green jobs are decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment, be they in traditional sectors such as manufacturing and construction, or in new, emerging green sectors such as renewable energy and energy efficiency
Metallurgical Technician provides technical support in researching, testing, and processing metals, minerals, alloys, and energy-related materials. They assist metallurgical engineers and scientists in analysing material properties, conducting laboratory experiments, monitoring extraction and production processes, and ensuring quality, safety, and environmental compliance, spanning applications in metal production, mining, foundry operations, oil and gas extraction, and renewable fuel development, and contributing to process optimisation, equipment maintenance, and the development of new materials and technologies.
Tasks
Prepare, test, and analyse metal and ore samples using mechanical, chemical, and microscopic techniques to determine properties and quality.
Conduct hardness, tensile, corrosion resistance, and other quality control tests, and report findings to support engineering and production decisions.
Assist in metallurgical processes such as smelting, refining, alloy production, casting, and renewable fuel production, and monitor equipment operation under supervision.
Maintain and calibrate laboratory and production equipment, and perform routine inspections and maintenance of metallurgical and mining equipment.
Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards in laboratory, production, and field operations.
Assist in collecting, recording, and preparing technical reports on process and production data.
Skills
Basic
Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to perform tests, interpret results, and resolve technical challenges.
Communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, team members, and stakeholders, including documenting and presenting results clearly.
Demonstrate basic computer literacy, including data entry, Microsoft Office proficiency, and record-keeping.
Follow safety protocols and work collaboratively in teams, demonstrating physical stamina and manual dexterity where required.
Maintain high attention to detail in sampling, testing, monitoring, and process operations to ensure accuracy and safety.
Specific
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, process flow diagrams, and laboratory results under guidance.
Application of quality control procedures and standards to ensure material, process, and product reliability.
Competency in operating, controlling, and performing routine maintenance of metallurgical, mining, and fuel production equipment.
Knowledge of metallurgical, extractive, and foundry processes, including smelting, refining, alloy formulation, and metal casting.
Knowledge of safety regulations, environmental standards, and work safety practices across metallurgical and mining operations.
Proficiency in metallurgical and material testing techniques, including microscopes, spectrometers, hardness testers, and tensile machines.
Skills in chemical and physical analysis of metals and fuels, including laboratory testing and reporting.
