Oceanography Technician assists scientists in studying the physical, chemical, and biological properties of oceans, seas, and coastal areas. They collect, process, and analyse water, sediment, and marine organism samples, and operate specialised equipment to monitor ocean conditions, supporting marine research, environmental assessments, and resource management, often conducted on research vessels, at coastal stations, or in laboratories.
Tasks
Deploy, operate, and maintain oceanographic instruments such as Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) sensors, current meters, and water samplers.
Collect water, sediment, and biological samples from marine environments for laboratory analysis.
Conduct routine basic chemical or microbiological analyses on collected marine samples.
Assist in the calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of oceanographic and laboratory equipment.
Prepare materials, samples, and equipment for marine fieldwork, experiments, and laboratory tests.
Conduct marine field surveys and assist in collecting oceanographic and environmental data.
Process and organise collected data using specialised software and data systems.
Record observations and measurement results accurately during field and laboratory activities.
Assist in preparing technical reports, documentation, and summaries of survey or laboratory findings.
Ensure compliance with safety procedures and operational protocols during field and laboratory work.
