Optometry Officer Grade U9 responsible for carrying out eye examinations to detect visual function anomalies, managing and treating these anomalies using spectacles, contact lenses, prisms, vision therapy, and low vision devices, as well as serving as a consultant on colour vision issues professionally in industry and road driving, and providing advisory services to meet the needs and expectations of stakeholders.
Tasks
Performing refractive tests to determine the degree of refractive error and prescribing appropriate spectacles for patients requiring corrective lenses, including those who have or have not undergone surgery.
Determining patients’ visual acuity accurately across all age groups, from infants to adults, and assesses suitability for contact lens use, contact lens fitting, and follow-up care.
Providing treatment for patients with visual impairment and determining appropriate assistive devices for their use, referring patients to the Department of Social Welfare, Special Education Schools, or the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) where necessary.
Measuring corneal curvature in post-surgical patients and identifying sutures that require removal.
Performing basic orthoptic examinations for patients with strabismus and providing treatment using spectacles, prisms, or visual therapy.
Conducting diabetic eye screening using a fundus camera at district health clinics and refers cases to Ophthalmology Specialists when required.
Delivering lectures in the field of Optometry to Medical Officers, Nurses, and Assistant Medical Officers during Hospital CME sessions.
Determining clinic schedules, appointments for new and follow-up cases, and referrals to Ophthalmology Specialists, including regular vision and diabetes screenings at Health Clinics.
Preparing monthly and annual statistical data of patients treated at the Optometry Clinic.
