GREEN
Green jobs are decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment, be they in traditional sectors such as manufacturing and construction, or in new, emerging green sectors such as renewable energy and energy efficiency
Hydrologist conducts research on the distribution, movement, and physical properties of surface and underground water. They analyse water cycles, assess water availability and flood risks, and manage water resources to support environmental sustainability and safe water supply. Their work involves field investigations, data collection, hydrological modelling, and providing advice on water management, pollution control, and regulatory compliance.
Tasks
Conduct hydrological surveys and field investigations to assess surface water and groundwater systems.
Collect and analyse hydrological and water quality data from surface water and groundwater sources.
Model surface water and groundwater flow, including flood and water availability scenarios.
Advise government agencies, private sector organisations, and stakeholders on water resource management, water availability, flood risks, and pollution control.
Install and monitor water quality and flow measurement instruments.
Prepare technical reports, maps, visualisations, and assessments to support water resource planning, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
Assess hydrological findings against water regulations, environmental standards, and sustainability requirements.
Skills
Basic
Attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and analysis.
Critical thinking.
Effective communication and teamwork.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Understanding of environmental regulations and safety procedures.
Specific
Knowledge of hydrochemical and water quality analysis in line with environmental standards.
Knowledge of preparing technical reports, environmental impact assessments, and scientific documentation.
Knowledge of research and development methods in hydrology and water resource studies.
Proficiency in analysing environmental and hydrological data using statistical methods and programming tools such as MATLAB, Python, or R.
Proficiency in applying Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing tools for mapping, spatial analysis, and water resource assessment.
Proficiency in hydrological and hydraulic modelling for e.g. using Hydrologic Engineering Center – Hydrologic Modelling System (HEC-HMS), Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), or MODFLOW.
Proficiency in hydrological data visualisation and reporting, including the use of Tableau.
Proficiency in managing water resource and environmental data records and databases.
Proficiency in scenario evaluation for water resource management and environmental monitoring.
