Ceramics/Clay/Pottery Production Operator
Ceramics/Clay/Pottery Production Operator is responsible for producing ceramic, clay, stone, and related products by operating and monitoring machinery and kilns. They prepare and mix raw materials according to specified formulations, shape or mould products using manual or mechanical techniques, and control firing processes to achieve the required quality and consistency. The role includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting equipment issues, adhering to safety procedures, and collaborating with production teams to ensure finished products meet standards.
Tasks
Prepare, measure, and mix raw materials to produce clay, pottery, ceramics, bricks, or tiles according to production formulas.
Operate and monitor mixing machines, kilns, and other production equipment, adjusting controls to ensure consistent product quality.
Load and unload materials and products safely, including arranging items in kilns or on pottery wheels.
Inspect raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products for defects such as cracks, splits, breaks, discolouration, or other imperfections.
Apply decorative finishes, glazes, or surface treatments to ceramic or pottery items as required.
Maintain cleanliness and safety of work areas in compliance with workplace safety and environmental regulations.
Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and basic troubleshooting on production machinery and kilns.
Record production data, batch details, and kiln or machine performance logs accurately.

Basic
Ability to follow safety procedures and standard operating procedures when operating machinery, kilns and handling materials.
Attention to detail to ensure accurate processing, firing, glazing and consistent product quality.
Basic literacy and numeracy skills to read work instructions, follow recipes or specifications, and record production data.
Communication and teamwork skills to coordinate effectively with supervisors and production team members.
Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination and physical stamina to handle materials, tools and equipment in a production environment.
Specific
Ability to apply glaze formulations and finishing techniques for ceramic products.
Ability to monitor machine performance and performing minor troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
Competency in performing quality control checks for product consistency and specifications.
Experience with ceramic production techniques including wheel-throwing, hand-building, and mould-based methods.
Knowledge of preparing and handling raw materials with correct consistency and moisture content.
Knowledge of properties of different clay types and ceramic materials.
Proficiency in operating and controlling clay mixing, extrusion, and pottery machinery.
Proficiency in operating kilns and interpreting temperature charts and firing schedules.
