Metal Moulders work across foundry and industrial settings to produce metal parts and components, inspecting and repairing molds as needed to support efficient and accurate production.
Tasks
Interpret technical drawings and prepare moulds for metal casting.
Make moulds and cores by hand or using auxiliary and precision machinery, including computer numerical control, electrical discharge machining, lathes, and milling equipment.
Assemble, align, and set up mould components, including gating and venting systems, ensuring proper compaction and shape.
Mix and prepare sand or other materials for moulds and cores, ensuring quality and dimensional accuracy.
Pour molten metal into moulds and remove castings safely.
Inspect moulds, cores, and castings for defects, surface finish, and compliance with specifications.
Clean, repair, maintain, and service moulds, cores, and foundry equipment.
Maintain safety, cleanliness, and organisation of the work area according to foundry standards.
Document inspection results and repair activities, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.

Ability to read and follow technical drawings.

Knowledge of metal moulding and casting processes, including safe operation of equipment.

Ability to handle and pour molten metal according to casting processes and metal properties.
Ability to troubleshoot and maintain moulding and foundry equipment.
Competency in assembling, aligning, and maintaining moulds and cores, including gating and venting systems.
Experience with preparing, mixing, and handling moulding materials, including sand and cores, ensuring proper compaction and shape.
Expertise in inspecting moulds, cores, and castings for defects and performing quality control and corrective actions.
Knowledge of different casting methods and heat treatment processes.
Proficiency in operating and maintaining moulding and foundry machines, including computer numerical control, electrical discharge machining, milling, grinding, and lathes.
Proficiency in using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing software and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
Skill in applying welding techniques relevant to mould assembly and repair.
