Train Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of train and rail systems through the maintenance, repair, and inspection of rolling stock and railway equipment. They diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults, oversee maintenance teams, and coordinate corrective actions to maintain compliance with safety and operational standards, supervising daily rail operations, enforcing safety protocols, and managing documentation to support reliable, timely, and secure passenger and freight services.
Tasks
Conduct routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on trains, locomotives, and rail vehicles, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.
Inspect rolling stock, engines, and onboard systems using diagnostic tools to identify faults, wear, and performance issues.
Repair, replace, or adjust faulty components such as braking systems, wheels, suspension, traction motors, and control units.
Dismantle, reassemble, and lubricate engines and critical components to maintain optimal performance.
Document maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and incidents, and ensure compliance with safety, engineering, and legal standards.
Collaborate with engineers and quality control personnel to support fault resolution and system improvements.
Skills
Basic
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, engineering drawings, and schematic diagrams for maintenance and inspection tasks.
Effective communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with colleagues, supervisors, and stakeholders.
Knowledge of railway safety procedures and regulations to ensure safe operations and compliance.
Problem-solving and critical thinking to diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, or operational issues.
Proficiency in using tools and basic computer systems for maintenance, diagnostics, reporting, and record-keeping.

Ability to interpret technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and railway regulations and standards.
Ability to perform mechanical and electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of train components and systems.
Competency in preventive maintenance, component-level repairs, and maintenance record management.
Knowledge in railway signalling interfaces and operational procedures relevant to maintenance activities.
Knowledge in rolling stock and locomotive systems, including bogies, traction drives, braking systems, electrical wiring, and pneumatic circuits.
Knowledge in safety management systems and compliance procedures.
Proficiency in Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and asset management software.
Proficiency in using diagnostic, testing, and precision measurement equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, and ultrasonic flaw detectors.
Proficiency in using specialised railway tools and machinery for installation, assembly, and repair.
